Are you passionate about addressing the climate crisis and eager to apply your research expertise to help transform the transport sector? Would you like to contribute to a pioneering research programme that seeks to understand and reduce the whole-life carbon impacts of transportation? If you're motivated by a dynamic and collaborative working environment that strives to make real-world change, this role could be the perfect opportunity for you.

About the Role

The University is seeking to appoint a committed and enthusiastic researcher to join the Inspiring Futures for Zero Carbon Mobility (INFUZE) programme. This £7.8 million research initiative, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), aims to create transformative solutions for transportation in the face of the climate emergency. The project brings together expertise from the University of Leeds, Lancaster University, and the Royal College of Art, working collaboratively to rethink how transport systems can operate more sustainably while improving equity and quality of life.

Your role will be pivotal in driving forward cutting-edge research on the whole-life carbon impacts of transitioning away from individual car ownership. As part of this ambitious initiative, you will work closely with communities, businesses, transport providers, and government bodies to explore and implement real-world trials, focusing on innovative transport systems that support the transition to zero-carbon mobility.

About the INFUZE Programme

INFUZE is more than just a research project; it represents a bold and collaborative endeavour to revolutionise the transport sector in response to the climate crisis. The transport system is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions, and INFUZE is committed to delivering solutions that not only reduce these emissions but also improve social fairness and community wellbeing.

The INFUZE programme seeks to work with citizens and businesses to reimagine transport systems, transitioning away from the traditional reliance on private car ownership. Instead, the programme will explore alternative mobility solutions such as shared transport, active travel, public transportation enhancements, and the integration of emerging technologies. It will also consider the whole life-cycle carbon impact of transport systems, ensuring that solutions are sustainable from the production stage through to operation and eventual decommissioning.

INFUZE’s collaborative approach involves working closely with stakeholders to ensure that the outcomes of the research are not only scientifically robust but also practical and applicable to real-world settings. Throughout the programme, a series of increasingly ambitious real-world trials will be conducted in partnership with communities, transport providers, and government agencies to explore how these new systems can be implemented effectively.

Key Responsibilities

As a researcher in the INFUZE programme, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting comprehensive research on the whole-life carbon impacts of the transport system, with a specific focus on the transition away from individualised car ownership.

  • Working closely with multidisciplinary teams across the partner universities, bringing together expertise from various fields such as engineering, design, behavioural science, and public policy.

  • Engaging with stakeholders, including citizens, businesses, transport providers, and governmental bodies, to co-create practical solutions and ensure that the research is grounded in real-world challenges and opportunities.

  • Designing and implementing real-world trials, testing innovative transport solutions and evaluating their impact on carbon reduction, social fairness, and quality of life.

  • Contributing to the development of policy recommendations, ensuring that the outcomes of the research inform government decision-making on transport and mobility.

  • Disseminating research findings through academic publications, conferences, workshops, and stakeholder engagement events.

  • Supporting the development of future research proposals and collaborations that extend the impact of the INFUZE programme beyond its initial five-year timeline.
