Specialist Mentors (Mental Health) 

The University of Kent’s Wellbeing team is currently seeking to recruit additional Specialist Wellbeing Mentors to join our pool of dedicated professionals. This sessional role involves providing tailored, hourly paid support to students, with a competitive pay rate of £29.98 per hour, inclusive of a holiday uplift.

About the Role

As a Specialist Wellbeing Mentor, you will provide non-medical, one-to-one support to students experiencing a range of challenges, including mental health difficulties, autistic spectrum disorders, and/or ADHD. Your support will be crucial in helping students develop essential skills such as managing anxiety, improving time management, and effectively organizing their academic workload. The ultimate goal is to empower students to confidently navigate the demands of university life and achieve academic success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one mentoring for students with mental health challenges and neurodiverse conditions.

  • Assist students in developing coping strategies for anxiety, time management, and workload organization.

  • Recognize when to refer students to other support services or professionals.

  • Maintain a flexible approach to mentoring, adapting to the individual needs of each student.

Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for candidates with substantial expertise and experience in supporting individuals with mental health challenges and related issues. A thorough understanding of the pressures faced by students in higher education is essential. Additionally, candidates must possess the following:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification.

  • Strong counseling skills.

  • Current membership in a recognized professional organization such as the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or the University Mental Health Advisers Network (UMHAN).

Working Hours

The hours for this role are flexible and will be agreed upon with your line manager before starting. These hours will be reviewed each term to ensure they meet both your availability and the student's needs. However, a minimum commitment of 6 hours per week during term time is required to provide consistent support to our students.

Location and Start Date

The expected commencement date for this role is as soon as possible. The role will primarily be based at the Canterbury campus, with potential opportunities to support students at other locations as needed.
