Pembroke College, one of the prestigious colleges within the University of Cambridge, invites applications for the Harry F. Guggenheim Research Fellowship, starting on 1 October 2025. This Fellowship is designed for scholars who have recently completed or are about to complete their doctoral degrees, and it offers a unique opportunity to explore and contribute to the understanding of violence in its myriad forms.

About the Fellowship:

The Harry F. Guggenheim Research Fellowship supports research focused on the nature, consequences, and reduction of violence. We are particularly interested in proposals that address antidemocratic threats and political violence in mature democracies. This is an exciting opportunity for early-career researchers to make significant contributions to this vital field of study.

Duration and Stipend:

The Fellowship is tenable for three years. The stipend for the position is £30,786.50, which is on point 34 of the College scale (subject to any future pay awards and revisions before the start date). In addition to the stipend, the Fellowship includes a range of benefits designed to support your research and academic career.

Responsibilities and Benefits:

As a Research Fellow at Pembroke College, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Engage in your research with the support of a prestigious institution.

  • Contribute to the academic community through a limited amount of teaching, as permitted by the Governing Body.

  • Access subsidized accommodation either within the College or in College-owned flats or houses. If you choose not to take up the accommodation, a generous housing allowance will be provided.

  • Utilize a dedicated study space within the College to facilitate your research.

  • Enjoy full dining rights in College, providing a rich and engaging academic environment.

  • Apply for additional grants to support your research activities.

  • Be an integral member of the Governing Body of the College, participating in its academic and administrative functions.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be considered for the Harry F. Guggenheim Research Fellowship, candidates should:

  • Have recently completed, or be about to complete, a doctoral degree in a relevant field.

  • Demonstrate a strong research proposal focused on the nature, consequences, and reduction of violence, with particular emphasis on antidemocratic threats and political violence in mature democracies.
