International SOS, the world’s leading provider of medical and security assistance, is offering an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that spans 90 countries. With over 12,000 employees in more than 1,000 locations globally, we are proud to deliver high-quality telehealth and digital health solutions to Fortune 500 companies, NGOs, and governments worldwide.

About International SOS

Established over 35 years ago, International SOS has grown to become the global market leader in telehealth services and medical assistance. From corporate clients to government organizations, we serve a broad range of industries, offering innovative healthcare and security services that set the benchmark in medical excellence. As part of our growing team, you will contribute to a mission-driven organization that prioritizes quality healthcare, patient safety, and medical innovation.

We are currently seeking a Coordinating Nurse to join our office-based team at Chiswick Park, London. This is a unique opportunity to utilize your nursing skills in an environment where every day brings a new challenge. You’ll be part of a diverse team that delivers essential medical services around the world—all without the strain of night shifts.

Why This Role is Unique

This isn’t just another nursing position. As a Coordinating Nurse, you’ll be in direct communication with patients and medical professionals across 27 countries, working alongside colleagues who are just as dedicated to patient care as you are. You’ll have the opportunity to make critical decisions in high-pressure situations, whether it's guiding a patient in a remote part of the world, arranging medical evacuations, or offering pre-travel health advice. Every day is different, and the opportunity to work with a global team means constant learning and professional development.

Key Responsibilities of a Coordinating Nurse

As a Coordinating Nurse, you will be at the forefront of our mission to deliver outstanding medical care to patients around the world. Your daily responsibilities will include:

  1. Telephonic Triage and Medical Assessment
One of the core functions of this role is conducting telephonic triage. You will receive calls from patients located anywhere in the world, assessing their medical conditions through a combination of clinical knowledge and available medical data. From managing complex medical emergencies to offering primary care advice, you’ll provide evidence-based recommendations, ensuring patients receive the care they need.

  2. Pre-Travel Medical Advice
You’ll be responsible for advising clients on travel-related health risks. This involves assessing pre-trip medical conditions, vaccination requirements, and travel health risks based on the patient’s destination. In many cases, you will be the first point of contact for patients planning trips to areas where healthcare access may be limited, requiring you to provide expert guidance on staying safe and healthy.

  3. Assessing Standards of Care
An essential part of this role is assessing the quality of medical care available in the patient’s location, and comparing it against international standards. Based on these assessments, you’ll determine the most appropriate course of action, whether it involves coordinating local treatment, arranging transport to a higher standard of care, or providing guidance on fitness to fly.

  4. Coordinating Global Medical Care
Whether it’s arranging a consultation with a local healthcare provider, liaising with international medical professionals, or directing patients to the best medical facilities in their region, your work will have a direct impact on the quality of care patients receive. You’ll use your clinical judgment and a tailored risk analysis approach to make these decisions, balancing the patient’s condition with the geographic limitations of their location.

  5. Medical Evacuations and Repatriations
In cases where patients require specialized treatment that’s not available locally, you will coordinate medical evacuations and repatriations. This might involve organizing a medical escort via a commercial airline or arranging an air ambulance for critical cases. You will also have the unique opportunity to act as a medical escort for these operations, ensuring that patients receive the care they need during transport.

  6. Quality Improvement Initiatives
As part of International SOS’s commitment to excellence, you’ll also have the opportunity to participate in internal quality improvement projects. These initiatives are designed to enhance the services we offer, and your input will help shape the future of global telehealth and medical assistance.

Who We're Looking For

The role of a Coordinating Nurse requires a unique combination of clinical expertise, adaptability, and strong communication skills. To succeed in this position, you should meet the following criteria:

  • NMC Registration and Clinical Experience: You should be a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), with around 5 years of experience in ICU, emergency care, or related fields. Your broad clinical knowledge will enable you to manage a wide range of medical situations, from routine primary care to complex emergencies.

  • Global Health Experience: Experience in global health, public health, military nursing, humanitarian work, or travel medicine is highly desirable. This background will prepare you to deal with the unique challenges of coordinating care across different healthcare systems and geographical locations.

  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: The ability to identify and escalate critical medical issues is essential in this role. You’ll need to thrive under pressure, make decisions quickly, and adapt to fast-paced situations.

  • Excellent Communication Skills: As this is a telehealth position, a professional and empathetic telephone manner is crucial. You’ll also need proficiency in MS Office applications and databases. Fluency in English is required, and additional language skills are an advantage.
