The University of Sussex invites applications for a fixed-term, part-time position as a Lecturer in Digital Media Studies for our highly regarded online degree program, MA Media, Ethics & Social Change.
This role offers a unique opportunity to work in a remote, flexible setting while being part of a dynamic academic community at a research-led, internationally renowned university. This post, funded by a research grant, will cover for a faculty member on leave and is ideal for candidates with strong expertise in digital media theory, media ethics, and the role of media in driving social justice and climate action.
About the Role
As a Lecturer in Digital Media Studies, you will be responsible for delivering several 7-week online modules that form a key part of our MA Media, Ethics & Social Change degree. This program empowers students to leverage digital media in meaningful ways, addressing critical issues such as social justice, climate change, and cultural representation through a media lens.
Your role will involve convening, teaching, and assessing courses on topics such as:
Digital Media Theory
Digital Media Ethics
Media and Climate Change
Race, Culture, and Media
Public Relations
Participatory Media
These modules are designed to provide students with a critical understanding of the ethical dilemmas posed by digital media and how these tools can be used to foster equity, activism, and positive change. While pre-existing teaching materials for these modules will be provided, you will have the opportunity to enhance and adapt the content based on your expertise, incorporating the latest research and trends in digital media.
This is a remote-working position, with the option to work entirely from home. Aside from some initial induction meetings held on campus, you will not be required to physically attend the university unless you choose to do so.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
Deliver engaging online learning experiences for students across several digital media modules.
Convening and assessing modules, ensuring high standards of academic delivery.
Facilitate discussions on critical digital media topics, including ethics, climate change, and participatory culture.
Manage the virtual learning environment (VLE), fostering an inclusive and collaborative digital classroom.
Support student learning through regular feedback, discussion forums, and one-on-one virtual meetings.
Curriculum Development
Enhance pre-existing teaching materials by incorporating current research and evolving trends in digital media.
Ensure that the curriculum remains relevant, engaging, and aligned with industry and academic developments.
Tailored learning materials to accommodate different learning styles and needs, maintaining high levels of student engagement and satisfaction.
Assessment and Feedback
Develop and grade assessments, including essays, projects, and presentations.
Provide detailed, constructive feedback that fosters academic growth and critical thinking.
Maintain timely grading practices and ensure clear communication with students.
Academic Administration
Take on administrative duties related to the MA Media, Ethics & Social Change degree.
Collaborate with program directors and faculty to ensure the smooth operation of online courses.
Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and engagement.
Assist in managing program logistics, including scheduling and student support.
Research and Scholarship
While this is primarily a teaching role, you will have a time allocation to develop a portfolio of scholarship in digital media studies, contributing to the broader academic community.
Engage with research-led teaching, drawing on your academic expertise to enhance the learning experience.
Participate in online academic discussions, conferences, and other relevant scholarly activities.
About You
We are seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking candidate with strong expertise in digital media studies and a demonstrated ability to teach in a virtual environment. You should have a passion for understanding how digital tools can drive positive societal change and possess the ability to engage and inspire a diverse, international cohort of students.
Essential Criteria
Academic Expertise: You will hold a PhD in digital media, media studies, or a closely related field. We will also consider candidates close to completion of their doctorate, or those with substantial professional experience in digital media production, social justice communication, or climate activism.
Teaching Experience: Demonstrable experience in teaching or tutoring at the university level, ideally in online or distance learning environments. You should be adept at using digital tools to create interactive and engaging learning experiences.
Research-Led Teaching: Ability to integrate the latest research and emerging trends into your teaching. You will be comfortable guiding students in critical thinking and facilitating discussions on complex ethical issues related to media and technology.
Communication and Collaboration: Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, alongside the ability to work collaboratively with other faculty and administrative teams. You should also be comfortable leading virtual discussions and engaging students through online platforms.
Adaptability: The role requires flexibility in managing multiple modules and adapting teaching styles to suit a remote learning format. You should be comfortable with virtual learning environments such as Canvas, Moodle, or Blackboard.
