At Waitrose & Partners, we are more than just a supermarket—we are a community, a team, and a partnership. If you are looking for a rewarding role where your efforts are valued, and you have the opportunity to grow and develop, becoming a Supermarket Assistant could be the perfect role for you.

As part of the John Lewis Partnership, Waitrose & Partners is a unique business. Our employees, known as Partners, aren’t just workers—they are co-owners of the business. This means that everyone here shares responsibility for our success, with profits distributed among all Partners. It’s more than a job—it’s an ethos and one that every Partner works by. In return, we offer our Partners incredible benefits, ongoing training and development, and the chance to build a fulfilling career in a business that genuinely values them.

Why Waitrose & Partners?

Waitrose & Partners isn’t just about selling groceries—it’s about creating a shopping experience that customers love. We believe in offering enriched experiences to both our customers and our Partners. That’s why we are committed to ensuring our Partners not only enjoy their work but are also fully supported, trained, and rewarded for their contributions.

Working at Waitrose means becoming part of a supportive, passionate team that takes pride in everything we do—from advising customers on the latest food and drink trends to ensuring that the shelves are stocked, the store is spotless, and every customer leaves with exactly what they need.

The Role of a Supermarket Assistant

As a Supermarket Assistant, you’ll be the face of our brand. You’ll play a crucial role in delivering an exceptional shopping experience, making sure that every customer feels welcome, valued, and confident in their purchase decisions. You’ll have a variety of responsibilities, and no two days will be the same. This means that you’ll need to be adaptable, ready to step into different roles as needed, and always prepared to go the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Customer Service: Engage with customers in a warm, friendly, and professional manner. You’ll assist with product advice, answer questions, and guide customers through their shopping experience, ensuring they leave with the products they need and the knowledge to use them.

  • Product Knowledge: Keep up to date with food and drink trends, and develop a thorough understanding of the products we sell. This includes our range of fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, wines, and specialty items. You’ll be expected to share your knowledge with customers, helping them make informed choices.

  • Stock Management: You’ll be responsible for replenishing stock on the shop floor, ensuring that all products are displayed attractively and are easy to locate. You’ll also monitor stock levels and report shortages or overstocked items as needed.

  • Housekeeping: Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene throughout the store. This includes ensuring that aisles, shelves, and counters are clean and well-organized at all times, and that displays are eye-catching and up-to-date.

  • Handling Transactions: You’ll operate the tills, handling cash and card transactions according to company procedures. Accuracy is key, and you’ll also assist with bagging and packing items as necessary.

  • Safety and Compliance: Follow all company guidelines regarding health and safety, food handling, and store operations. You’ll also adhere to the business dress code and maintain personal hygiene standards, ensuring you’re always representing the brand in the best possible way.

  • Team Support: Waitrose operates as a team, and as a Supermarket Assistant, you’ll be expected to support your colleagues across different areas of the branch as required. Whether it’s stepping in to help with deliveries, providing extra hands on the shop floor, or assisting with customer inquiries, teamwork is essential to our success.
