Assistant Professor: Modern Japanese Literature and Media


The Department of East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position focusing on Japan's Modern Literary and Media Cultures. It seeks to recruit a scholar who focuses on Japanese literature of the late nineteenth century through the present, as she/he delineates and configures within the transmedial context literature as inter- and transmedia-oriented and follows and tracks the various modes in which Japanese literature, media, and popular culture shape and thereby cast their influences globally.


Ideal applicants will be concerned with the cultures of creativity, material culture, or the formal aspects of verbal and textual production especially as these have taken on new lives from the traditional book/paper format to mediums like film, radio, television, anime, and more recently, the internet and social media. This is particularly geared toward scholars whose work engages with racial and social justice or who use digital methodologies to advance literature study.




Key Responsibilities:


  • I will work on curricula and teach modern Japanese literature and media from the late 19th century to the present.

  • Address the evolving landscape of literary production across different media.

  • Discuss racial and social justice issues related to Japanese literary and media contexts.

  • Contribute to the mission of diversity and inclusiveness pursued by the department through research, teaching, and service.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • A focus would be on how Japanese culture extends around the world and its interdisciplinary connections.

  • Interest in digital methods with critical potential for crossing the boundaries of literary research. 


Salary: This is an estimated salary range although for the working position, the estimated salary range is $82,200 to $111,800.
