Postdoctoral Scientist in Medical Image Analysis
Postdoctoral Scientist in Medical Image Analysis
A postdoctoral position is available for an accomplished young scientist to join the research group of Prof. Tom Wilkinson at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Southampton. The group develops innovative techniques for the early diagnosis of airway diseases, with a focus on COPD, with special interest in medical imaging.
This role is within a collaborative project with Dr Michael Bennett, a senior research scientist in image processing at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. Prof Wilkinson and Dr Bennett are the leaders in pioneering the development of novel techniques for enhanced early diagnosis of COPD based on machine learning-enhanced analysis of lung CT imaging.
Fully funded by Asthma + Lung UK, this 18-month full-time role is led by award recipient Dr Michael Bennett. It will leverage anonymized medical imaging data to develop the first algorithm, as diagnostic tools of firsts are going to be groundbreaking.
Key Responsibilities:
It will develop sophisticated algorithms for medical image analysis targeted for early COPD detection applications.
Analysis will be performed on anonymized lung CT imaging with the help of ML to enhance the precision of diagnosis.
Work as part of a multidisciplinary team with clinicians and other healthcare professionals within Southampton General Hospital.
Contributing to the scientific computing parts of the project using MATLAB and/or Python.
About You:
PhD or close to completion in the area of scientific computing, applied mathematics, or a related field.
Strong experience with MATLAB and/or Python for scientific computing.
Good understanding of applied mathematics. A good track record in machine learning is a plus.
Interest in working in a collaborative, research-based set up with international and local partnerships.
Why Join Us?
This is an opportunity to be at the cutting edge of medical image analysis and algorithm development within a dynamic research environment. Being based in Southampton General Hospital, it is possible to collaborate closely with clinicians at the point of care, which directly translates to impact. The University of Southampton is working to be an inclusive and supportive working environment; Southampton itself is a thriving and attractive place to live.
You may informally contact Dr. Michael Bennett on michael.bennett@uhs.nhs.uk for any informal enquiries.
Eligible candidates are those who are about to obtain their PhD. Award of the title Research Fellow occurs when a PhD is awarded. Until such time as the PhD is awarded, the title Senior Research Assistant will be applied prior to award.
The University of Southampton is committed to equality of opportunity and to promoting diversity in employment.
