The Role: Lecturer in Events and Tourism

As a Lecturer in Events and Tourism at DMU, you will play a vital role in the teaching and supervision of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Your primary responsibility will be to lead modules within the field of events, particularly focusing on arts and festivals management, while also contributing to the broader area of tourism. You will bring real-world industry experience to the classroom, particularly in producing and promoting live events, and your expertise will provide students with valuable insights into the practical aspects of event management. Your role will also involve teaching on topics such as marketing in events and tourism, entrepreneurship in events and tourism, and the planning and execution of cultural and arts festivals.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of working in the events and tourism industries, with particular emphasis on the creative sectors. Whether you have experience in promoting large-scale festivals or managing tourism ventures, you will be expected to translate this experience into your teaching, ensuring that students receive an education that is both academically rigorous and industry-relevant. This practical, hands-on approach to teaching is one of the hallmarks of DMU’s events and tourism provision, allowing students to engage with real-world challenges and develop the skills they need to succeed in their future careers.

In addition to classroom teaching, you will also be involved in organizing and leading field trips, offering students the opportunity to engage with the events and tourism sectors in real-world settings. These experiences are integral to the events and tourism programs at DMU, as they provide students with unique insights into the day-to-day operations of these industries, helping to bridge the gap between academic study and professional practice.

The Ideal Candidate

DMU is looking for a passionate and creative individual who shares the university’s values of being collaborative, community-minded, creative, and compassionate. These values are central to the university’s mission, and the ideal candidate will embody them in their approach to teaching, research, and industry engagement.

You will hold a minimum of a master’s degree and have substantial experience teaching in a higher education setting. Your teaching should be informed by significant industry experience in the Creative Industries, particularly within the fields of arts, events, and tourism. Whether you have produced major cultural festivals, developed tourism initiatives, or managed arts venues, your practical experience will inform your teaching and provide students with a unique, industry-focused perspective on the subjects they study.

In this role, you will be expected to teach a range of thematic areas, including:

  • Events and Festivals Management: This includes the planning, promotion, and execution of live cultural events, from small community arts festivals to large-scale international celebrations.

  • Marketing in Events and Tourism: Students will learn about the latest marketing strategies and tools used to promote events and tourism initiatives, with a particular focus on digital marketing and social media.

  • Entrepreneurship in Events and Tourism: You will help students develop an entrepreneurial mindset, encouraging them to think creatively about new business opportunities in the events and tourism sectors.

In addition to teaching, you will have the opportunity to engage in scholarship, knowledge exchange, consultancy, and/or research in areas related to events and tourism. DMU has a strong commitment to research, and the ideal candidate will either be already active in research or be willing to develop their research profile during their time at the university. This could include contributing to research projects within the Institutes of Humanities and Political Studies, or working on consultancy projects with industry partners.
